Welcome to Home Again, where each and every Tuesday I’ll be running down some of the best genre releases coming to home media.
All info is from the excellent Blu-ray.com. This isn’t every genre release, just the ones I find interesting. For the full list, follow that link.
Note: Apparently there was some confusion last week over at Blu-ray.com, as The Craft actually comes out today.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) – Warner Bros. – My son and I loved Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but this is another one of those movies that we just never made time to see in the theater. To be honest, the trailers weren’t amazing and both of us were disappointed at the decision to replace Colin Farrell – who was excellent – with Johnny Depp.
I have always liked Johnny Depp a lot, but those who complain about his unchanging Depp-ness over the last two decades are not wrong. Nothing I’ve seen about his supposed wife beating has convinced me one way or the other how I should feel about that (yet). And just know that I am inclined to believe victims.
Anyway, I still want to watch this, but might wait for Netflix.
Since it’s such a huge movie, Grindelwald is getting several different editions – 4k/Blu-ray, Best Buy Steelbook, Blu-ray/DVD, Amazon exclusive 3D Blu-ray, Best Buy exclusive 3D Blu-ray, Target exclusive DigiBook, 3D Blu-ray, and lord knows maybe more.
Mortal Engines (2018) – Universal Studios – Speaking of trailers that weren’t amazing, this one did nothing for me. I got no sense of the story whatsoever, only that I was supposed to be impressed with the “Produced By” credit. Judging from the box office I was not the only one who didn’t bother to see Mortal Engines in the theater.
Man’s Best Friend (1993) – Shout Factory – I haven’t seen this movie in years, but Ally Sheedy + Lance Henriksen + genetically altered killer dog = success in my eyes.
Seriously, though – aside from the likely tragic end I do think I dug this despite wishing it was Dean Koontz’ Watchers, which was also a movie, but was not good. The book was among the few of Koontz’ works that I considered great and I always wanted a solid adaptation.
WOW. This was a light week. Very little caught my eye. Don’t worry – next week promises to be a little more amazing. And spectacular. Perhaps even ultimate?
Whatever the case, things will be Poppin’.
Other Titles Worth Noting
