Dragon Con 2019 – The Dragon Awards

It’s time once again for Dragon Con’s Dragon Awards. Just like everything else about Dragon Con this is by the people, for the people. Regular schmucks like you and me sent in nominations. Well, you might not be a schmuck, but I sure am. And these same schmucks will pick the winners. Heck, you don’t even have to be going to Dragon Con to vote. I mean I hope you are going, but if you can’t then you can still be part of the action. Between this, and the ability to stream DCTV would be just like being there. Just register to vote here, confirm your email, and you’ll receive your ballot in a few days. Voting is open until Saturday August 31st, but you’ll be busy by then. So vote early, but not often. That’s one of the rules. I’ll admit that I don’t know everything about the nominees in each category. I do know something about a least one thing in every category though. That’s enough information to vote with. So go ahead and get voting. I’ll be back soon to let you guys know where you can find me, and other members of the Needless Things at Dragon Con.

Comic Book Wednesday: Previews August 2019 “Things from San Diego”

If you don’t know, Previews is the catalog that Diamond Comic Distributors use to offer the products they distribute to comic book stores around the country. This is where you can view and order (through your favorite Local Comic Book Shop) comic books, trade paperback collections, t-shirts, books, media, and toys and other collectibles from hundreds of different vendors that deal in geek-oriented merchandise. The genius part is that you actually have to pay for your copy of Previews for the privilege of ordering other things to pay for.

It’s like the Ren Fest except without the horse poo smell.

So every month a new edition of Previews is sent out to comic book stores. Contained in the pages within are products that might be currently available or could be released anytime in the next year; but are typically about two months away.

Now it’s time to discuss a few of the weird and/or wonderful items offered in this month’s edition! Continue reading “Comic Book Wednesday: Previews August 2019 “Things from San Diego””

Toy Review – One:12 Collective Diabolik from Mezco

I have to start by saying that this is not an action figure of John Phillip Law from Mario Bava’s Danger: Diabolik. It is based on the Italian Diabolik comic books that the movie adapted.

However, the movie was so well designed and Law was so perfectly cast that it doesn’t take a whole lot of squinting to convince oneself that this is a figure from the movie.

There aren’t many action figures that I’ve anticipated more than this one. I love Bava’s movie and like I said – this figure passes well enough. I never imagined in a million years we’d get Diabolik figures of any kind, let alone as part of the greatest action figure line of all time. Now that this figure is out, the obvious next step is One:12 figures of the Beastie Boys from the Body Movin’ video, right?

Pipe dreams aside, Danger: Diabolik is a singular film experience, rolling James Bond, Batman ’66, and the feel of classic Lucha Libre movies into one bonkers, visually stunning movie. In my opinion it’s Mario Bava at his best – bringing a cartoon world to life with little regard for the mundane trappings of reality. Add an absolutely killer soundtrack by the legendary Ennio Morricone on top of that and I feel like it’s one of the most criminally under-recognized films ever.

If you don’t know, Diabolik is a sort of anti-James Bond. He’s the best thief in the world who uses gadgets and an almost superhuman set of skills to take what he wants, whenever he wants.

As the movie poster states:

“Meet Diabolik, Slick, Suave, Gentle, Brutal, Wild. Out for all he can take, caress or get away with…”

I’m not gonna lie – I was a little nervous to open this one. I even put it off for a couple of weeks after I bought it. After years of anticipation and intervening (mostly) excellence from Mezco, it almost felt like I was too hyped for this one.

Did it live up to my expectations, or did it let me down (deep, deep down)? Read on and find out! Continue reading “Toy Review – One:12 Collective Diabolik from Mezco”
